How do I size the outdoor condenser for this system?

Sizing works like a multi-zone mini split. Add the BTU value of this ducted unit (36,000 BTU) plus any additional indoor heads you plan to install.

Choose a MRCOOL® DIY condenser that meets or slightly exceeds that combined capacity.

Example:

  • 36k ducted air handler + two 9k wall units = 54k total capacity → choose a condenser that supports 54k BTU. 

Proper sizing prevents low airflow, poor humidity control, compressor strain, and premature system failure.

What size spaces do the 24k and 36k Hybrid air handlers typically cover?

  • 24K (2-Ton) — ideal for up to ~1,050 sq. ft.
  • 36K (3-Ton) — ideal for up to ~1,550 sq. ft.

Coverage depends on:

  • Outdoor climate
  • Insulation quality
  • Number and size of windows
  • Ceiling height
  • Room layout and duct restrictions

Homes with poor insulation or extreme climates may require the larger option or an auxiliary heat kit.

Does the MRCOOL® Hybrid air handler support auxiliary or emergency heat?
